Both IoT and big data have been part of our everyday lives and will surely continue changing marketing. With the easy access to internet and and technology, Statista shows that from 2005 to 2019, there is a spike increase from 1,024 million to 3,895 million users who have access to the internet.

Big Data refers to large data that is quicker processing or complex that is difficult to be processed by traditional methods. This means new data sources are used. Most importantly, these big data can be used to deal with business problems.

Analyst Dough Laney came up with the three V's to define big data:
1. Volume
Data sources are consolidated from many different sources. This includes business transactions, videos and even social media platforms.
2. Velocity
With the evolving expansion of the (IoT), data going into business at high speed needs to be handled efficiently. With big data, there will be high volumes of low-density and unstructured data. Tracking sensors and smart metering are urging the need to handle torrents of data real-time.
3. Variety
There are many forms of data. Traditional ones were usually structured and fitted into the database. Using big data, there are many data types such as: text, video, audio that requires additional pre-processing to support the data.
What is Internet of Things?
The way you are reading this blog post is connected to the internet, be it may be on a desktop, laptop, tablet or even mobile phone!
IoT refers to the countless of physical devices that connects to the internet, collating and sharing data around. From the smallest things such as computer chips to bigger things such as planes can be turned into parts of IoT.
By connecting different components, adding sensors brings out the digital intelligence to devices, allowing for parties to communicate real-time data without getting people involved. In a book titled Digital Destiny, by 2020 there will be an expected growth from 40 to 50 billion number of devices that are connected to the internet.
How marketers make use of IoT
IoT has a huge impact in helping marketing. IoT technology helps to enhance products and services of business to be more attractive. In today's world, it is very common to see savvy business owners, managers and even marketers use this technology breakthrough to transmit marketing messages. It helps companies to collect data at a faster pace from customers. Data provided can usually provide insights into consumer behaviours, making it easier for campaigns, services and products to become more successful.

Examples of IoT
1. With proper connection and data, IoT has initiatives to potentially reduce road congestion issues, noise reduction and air pollution. Such as a parking system.
2. Wearables such as Fitbit and Apple Watches does a bigger part in lives. It is not the mainstream watches which could only tell us the time or dates. Smart watches such as Apple Watch have synchronised into smartphone holsters by allowing calls and text messaging to be possible.
3. Working through voice assistance, Amazon Echo helps to perform a variety of functions. Such as: Providing weather reports, getting an Uber ride or even to play music.
Tell my in the comment section below how big data or IoT has helped you in one way or another!

@Sharlene Lai @Elizabeth Lee Thanks! Marketers can also use data on customer behavior to enable better experiences or better arrange and present the products they sell, for instance in a shop. It can also be used to getting a better insight into the buying journey and in which stage of it the customer is.

New Business Opportunities
Enterprises were among the first to see the enormous potential of big data analytics. The use of big data in business is clear though not always easily implemented. Improvements that come about through big data usually happen in the form of more efficient operations, better understanding of consumer behavior, improved management, and lastly, new innovative products.
Improved Security and Law Enforcement
Big data is on the three dimensions Volume, Velocity and Variety. However I feel it is not necessary that all three be present in a big data scenrario. For example, collecting data from sensors in IOT there will be high velocity and volume but not necessarily variety.
How do you think big data will change the future? Can you tell me more?
Interesting read. Are there any other ways marketers uses IoT?
Wow, what a informative post! But what are other ways marketers can use IoT for?
